CITY OF SAN DIEGO SUES MONSANTO: San Diego authorities filed a lawsuit on Monday against the agrichemical giant Monsanto, accusing the corporation of polluting the city's bay with carcinogenic chemicals that are so dangerous to human health they were banned in the U.S. more than 30 years ago. As the San Diego Reader notes, the city's lawsuit charges that "the risks did not deter Monsanto from trying to protect profits and prolong the use of PCB compounds such as Aroclor, as shown in a report from an ad hoc committee that Monsanto formed in 1969."

Deception: Major tortilla chip brand using 'No GMO' label on contaminated product

(NaturalNews) The nonprofit consumer advocacy group Consumer Reports has released a new report on genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) that warns of inadvertent deception and possible outright fraud in non-GMO claims that aren't certified by independent third parties such as the NON-GMO Project.

The popular tortilla chip brand "Xochitl Totopos de Maiz," according to the report, is actively selling tortilla chips all across America that bear a "No GMO" label, but that contain high amounts of GM corn. Tests conducted on six separate lots of the product revealed 75 percent or more GM corn content, despite labels to the contrary.

Last month, the United States Department of Agriculture approved a new genetically modified potato created by Simplot, one of the biggest potato suppliers in the country, opening the door to a new wave of processed junk foods containing unlabeled and potentially dangerous GMO potatoes. McDonald’s, the single-largest purchaser of potatoes in the country,1 has publicly refused to serve french fries sourced from these GMO potatoes.2 However, other major fast food chains, including Burger King, Wendy’s, and KFC, haven’t yet decided whether they will serve these so-called “frankenfries” to their customers. Over a decade ago, due to massive customer backlash, Simplot urged its growers to stop planting a variety of GMO potatoes developed by Monsanto after McDonald’s refused to sell french fries containing GMOs.3 Today, however, Simplot is back, and marketing its own, new, genetically engineered potato to the masses. While Simplot and the USDA claim this new GMO potato is safe for human consumption, the science is simply unclear. According to the Center for Food Safety, the technique used by Simplot to engineer its potato is untested and potentially unsafe for humans and the environment, saying, “USDA has inexplicably failed to undertake the legally required rigorous and overarching analysis of the GE crops’ impacts or reasonably foreseeable consequences.”4 Worse, because genetically modified foods are not labeled in the United States, you could soon be eating this new GMO potato without your knowledge. If other major fast food chains back down now and follow McDonalds' lead, we’ll have a real chance to keep another GMO potato out of our food supply. Chipotle is Now Virtually GMO-Free

Chipotle has said since the beginning of the year that they have been transitioning to a completely GMO-free company using only natural ingredients. Now that promise has (almost) become a reality

Chipotle has announced that amid their unwelcome price-hike, the company will now only use GMO-free ingredients. They would be the first fast food or fast causal restaurant to do so, according to Food Business News.

“To date we have eliminated virtually all of the GMO ingredients in our food,” Steve Ells, chairman and co-chief executive officer told Food Business News. “Our corn and flour tortillas are the only foods we currently serve that are made using ingredients that contain or could contain trace amounts of GMOs, and now we are testing new non-GMO recipes for these tortillas and we hope to be able to roll them out by the end of the year.”

Since the company has started replacing ingredients like soy oil with non-bioengineered sunflower and rice bran oils last year (along with the rising prices of avocado), prices have slightly increased by five percent. Chipotle did not respond to our requests for comment.
