March on Monsanto Hugely Outnumbers Counterdemonstrators

Ask Your Senators to Oppose Any Bill Prohibiting GMO Labels!, House Passes Bill to Prohibit States From Labeling GMOs!:

On the 23ed of May, the annual March on Monsanto encountered something new at Monsanto's DC lobbying headquarters: a tiny group of counterdemonstrators. Some were reported to hjave been paid by Monsanto to be there. Their presence is proof that the global campaign against Monsanto's patented "Roundup Ready" seeds and glyphosate herbicides is becoming effective.

One of the demands of the May 23,2015 marches in many cities is the recall of Roundup and a ban on its production and use. The other is for mandatory labelling of all the "frankenfoods" containing genetically-modified ingredients.

Monsanto protrayed their counterprotest as being for "science" but attempting to silence discussion of a scientific issue like GMO's and block labelling is better compared to the efforts of the Inquisition to silence Galileo. Also comparable to the Inquisition is the campaign of lawsuits and intimidation aimed at farmers who reuse seeds. Not only farmers with contracts with Monsanto, but other farmers whose crops may be contaminated by cross-pollination are subjected to lawsuits in which Monsanto claims presence of their genes forbids re-use of seeds. They seek ownership of crops in these lawsuits, forcing farmers not to plant any crop related to anything Monsanto sells if they wish to avoid the bulying. Even organic farmers who never use Roundup and whose crops become worthless if contaminated have been harassed.

City of San Diego Sues Monsanto

CITY OF SAN DIEGO SUES MONSANTO: San Diego authorities filed a lawsuit on Monday against the agrichemical giant Monsanto, accusing the corporation of polluting the city's bay with carcinogenic chemicals that are so dangerous to human health they were banned in the U.S. more than 30 years ago. As the San Diego Reader notes, the city's lawsuit charges that "the risks did not deter Monsanto from trying to protect profits and prolong the use of PCB compounds such as Aroclor, as shown in a report from an ad hoc committee that Monsanto formed in 1969."

Tell the FDA: No GMO Salmon in the U.S.

Tell the FDA: No GMO Salmon in the U.S.

AquaBounty, the company creating the first-ever genetically modified salmon for human consumption, is playing fast and loose with environmental regulations, and we may end up paying the price.

Last month, the Panamanian government fined AquaBounty for repeated violations of environmental regulations at its breeding facility, which is located in Panama to avoid scrutiny from U.S. regulators.1

Despite these blatant and dangerous transgressions, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is quietly in the process of approving this experimental “frankenfish” product for sale in the United States. We must take action now and urge the FDA to block GMO salmon from reaching our store shelves before it makes a final ruling.

Sign the petition: Tell the FDA to reject GMO salmon.

If the FDA grants AquaBounty the approval it is seeking, it will be nearly impossible to stop GMO salmon from lining grocery stores shelves throughout the United States. And since there are currently no federal or state laws requiring foods containing GMOs to be labeled, consumers may have no way of knowing whether the salmon in their shopping carts was engineered by AquaBounty.

AquaBounty's frankenfish is an Atlantic salmon, spliced with genes from an eel pout and growth hormone from a Chinook salmon. The result is an aggressive salmon that produces growth hormone year-round, grows twice as fast, and consume five times more food than wild salmon. Introducing these traits into the wild population would be disastrous – and irreversible.2

But according to Food & Water Watch, AquaBounty’s Panamanian breeding facility has a long history of security issues, including incidents of its GMO salmon escaping into the wild.3 If AquaBounty is unable or unwilling to follow basic rules to operate their facilities, how can we expect it to produce a safe product or ensure that its dangerous experiment won’t irreparably damage the environment?

Tens of thousands of CREDO activists have already submitted public comments urging the FDA to stop the sale of genetically engineered salmon in the U.S. The recent and repeated environmental violations by AquaBounty give us a crucial opportunity to apply even more pressure on the FDA to reject GMO salmon once and for all.

Sign the petition: Urge the FDA to reject GMO salmon in the United States.

Thanks for all you do to keep our food safe.

Monsanto just got even more evil

The day after the island of Maui passed a moratorium on GMO crops, Monsanto announced it was suing them to override the will of the people.

This is outrageous. Can you chip in $1 to help fight back against Monsanto's bulling?

Last Tuesday, the voters on the Hawaiian island of Maui passed a moratorium on genetically engineered crops.

The very next day, Monsanto announced plans to sue Maui to block the law from going into effect.

Maui is one of the most biologically diverse places on earth -- but it's being turned into one giant, open-air biological experiment by the rampant use of GMO crops and pesticides.

Monsanto and its allies spent more than $8 million to convince voters to defeat the GMO moratorium and still lost. So now they’re sending an army of lawyers to overturn the will of the people.

Can you chip in $1 to stand with Maui and pressure Monsanto to drop the lawsuit?

Yes, I'll donate $1 to help stop Monsanto from forcing its GMOs and pesticides on people who don't want them.

Monsanto, Dow, BASF, and other huge biotech companies have flocked to Hawaii because the climate allows them to plant and grow seeds that they can sell all over the world. Today, nearly 10 percent of all Hawaii's farmland is owned by just five biotech firms, including Monsanto.

That’s why Maui voters have been asking their elected officials to do something about GMOs and the heavy pesticides that go with them. But the politicians, most of them funded by Monsanto, have ignored the people.

So earlier this year, they took matters into their own hands, collecting thousands of petition signatures to force the issue to be put before voters directly as a citizen referendum.
And last Tuesday, the voters spoke: no GMOs on Maui.

Whatever you think about GMO crops and pesticides, it's just wrong for a corporation to use legal action to intimidate the public and override the democratic process. That's why it's so important we stand up, and stand together, whenever Monsanto tries to use these dirty tactics.

Together we can stand with Maui, and fight back and win. Will you chip in $1 today?

Yes, I'll chip in $1 to help stop Monsanto from forcing its GMOs and pesticides on people who don't want them.

Thanks for all that you do,
Paul, Jon, and the rest of the team at SumOfUs

Genetically Engineered Crops Have Contributed to Soil Conservation

Corporate pseudoscience can kill you.

“The notion that genetically engineered crops have contributed to soil conservation is a myth. But the risks that their use now poses to soil and water quality are frighteningly real.” Take a look at this article to reveal GE myths: http://orgcns.org/1uKig1S
