Hi
John-Michael, |
|
You and over 12,000 others sent
a message asking the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to prosecute
Shell Oil for its illegal drilling.
Yesterday you will have
received a reply from the EPA Chief Executive Officer Rob Forlong.
It’s good that he replied but unfortunately his email is just a
long and acronym filled smoke screen saying that they are not going to do
anything.
All they have done is say “please don’t
do it again”. It’s a slap on the wrist with a wet petrol
coupon.
This pathetic response from the agency responsible for
protecting our oceans and coastlines from potential oil disasters is just
not good enough and it’s important that we don’t let it slide.
A lack of regulatory oversight and enforcement was shown to be
one of the contributing factors in the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster. And a
culture of coziness between the regulators and oil drillers was another.
So with the wholesale handout of drilling and prospecting
rights in NZ waters to foreign oil companies at the moment, it’s very
concerning that our regulator is looking toothless and chummy with the oil
drillers. Such a lax attitude to regulation sets a dangerous precedent.
Please either reply directly to his email or send a fresh
one to EEZActivity@epa.govt.nz to tell Mr Forlong and the EPA what you
think of their failure to take action against Shell’s illegal
drilling.

PS It would be great if you could BCC or CC us on
response@greenpeace.org.nz so we can see how many emails get sent.
