A massive outbreak of mumps is plaguing migrant detention centers across the U.S., according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report.

There have been 931 cases of mumps in 57 Customs and Border Protection detention facilities across 19 U.S. states from September 2018 to August 2019 , the report states. The disease has reportedly afflicted migrant detainees as well as facility staff.

“These detention centers are a perfect storm for mumps to spread. Individuals have to be within 3-6 feet of each other to spread this virus. Sneezing, coughing on someone, or sharing a drink can spread the virus.” Dr. Todd Ellerin, Director of Infectious Diseases and Vice Chair of Medicine at Southshore Health in Massachusetts, told ABC News.

Immunization is the most effective way to combat mumps, according to CDC, though CBP officials say they do not routinely offer the mumps vaccine to detainees, according to ABC.

“In general, due to the short-term nature of CBP holding and the complexities of operating vaccination programs, neither CBP nor its medical contractors administer vaccinations to those in our custody,” a CBP spokeswoman said.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement also says it does not routinely provide vaccination to detainees unless medically necessary.

“Flu and other common vaccinations are offered by request only and are not routinely mandated unless deemed medically necessary, in that doing so would prevent a wider outbreak,” an ICE spokesperson said in a statement, according to ABC.

Ellerin is a strong advocate for vaccination in detention centers.

“From a public health perspective, I feel strongly that the benefits of vaccinating detainees against the flu and mumps outweighs the risks,” he told ABC.

“It is important that the staff receive maximal vaccination to avoid spreading the virus to their families, children, and communities,” he added.

Mumps is a viral infection that can cause fever, body aches and swollen glands, according to ABC. It spreads through respiratory contact, and does so very efficiently in close contact spaces such as detention centers, according to the report.

What is St. John’s Wort?
St. John’s wort has become extremely popular in recent decades as a potential cure-all herbal remedy for many health issues. [1] Unlike other herbal treatments, many of its health benefits have been verified by the scientific community and its herbal supplements are commonly prescribed by medical professionals. St. John’s wort is a small flowering plant from the Hypericum genus that has the scientific name of Hypericum perforatum, and it grows wild in Europe, but has since spread to the Americas, Russia, Asia, China, and the Middle East. You might know St. John’s wort by a different name, such as rosin rose or goatweed, but they all have the same impact. The vast range of its health benefits make it an important factor in herbal supplementation, and it is now widely available throughout the world.
St. John’s wort can be found in capsule, tincture, oil or raw form. The chemical constituents of St. John’s wort include bioflavonoids and a range of antioxidants that can have a significant impact on the hormonal, physical, and chemical behavior of the body. [2] While the components can be very valuable to human health, there are also a number of side effects or complications that can arise with the use of St. John’s wort in combination with certain conditions or medications. Consult your doctor before using St. John’s wort.
Health Benefits of St. John’s Wort
Health benefits of this amazing herb include its anti-depressant qualities, skin care, and many more.
Anti-depressant Qualities
Perhaps the most well-known effect of St. John’s wort is its anti-depressant nature. It has been widely used to relieve symptoms of depression for generations and is now a popular natural solution that doctors and psychiatrists often prescribe to their patients. [3] It contains a rare combination of antidepressant chemicals that inhibit or delay the reuptake of certain neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.
Relieves Anxiety
The health benefits of St. John’s wort extend beyond depression, as they help people suffering from anxiety and mood swings as well. [4] By helping to regulate the hormonal balance in the body, St. John’s wort is able to get the metabolism and internal clock back in line, providing help for sleeplessness, irritability, and chronic fatigue. Eliminating chronic stress hormones from the body can also improve overall health and cognitive function, as excess stress hormones can affect various organs.

Reduces Mood Swings
There are two distinct periods of feminine sexual health that can be challenging in terms of mood swings: pre-menstrual syndrome and menopause. [5] St. John’s wort is widely recommended for women in both these periods, as its chemical constituents have been shown to reduce mood swings and anxiety in menopausal women. Moreover, they reduce the severity of cramping and pre-menstrual irritation and depression.
Eases Withdrawal Symptoms
Early indications show that the use of St. John’s wort can be very helpful in easing cravings and withdrawal symptoms after quitting cigarettes, alcohol or other addictive substances. [6] This could prove very useful, as recovery from addiction is challenging. However, additional research on this particular benefit is still ongoing.
Antiviral Agent
New research has recently come to light saying that St. John’s wort has certain antiviral capabilities, which reduce the risk of AIDS, hepatitis, and other serious viral conditions. [7] The only problem with this is that very high doses of it are required for this sort of antiviral effect, which would also cause a range of unpleasant side effects.
Restores Hormonal Balance
As we already know about the antidepressant effects of St. John’s wort, the active ingredients also have strong effects on hormone regulation in the body. [8] Hypothyroidism is one of the most common thyroid disorders and this herb has been shown to reduce its symptoms and help the thyroid gland release normal levels of hormones again.
Anti-inflammatory Agent
The soothing nature of St. John’s wort and the rich concentration of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds make it perfect for easing the pain of arthritis, gout, joint discomfort, and muscle ache. [9] Just as it helps to ease inflammation on the skin and in the gut, St. John’s wort also lowers inflammation in the cardiovascular system, thereby helping lower blood pressure and decrease stress on the heart.
Skin Care
If you use St. John’s wort for topical application in the form of a salve or tincture, it can speed the healing process of burns, bruises, and scrapes by stimulating circulation of oxygenated blood to damaged skin cells. [10]

Reduces Pregnancy Pains
During pregnancy, hemorrhoids and other stretched out areas of the body can become very painful. Although it is not recommended to take oral supplements throughout the pregnancy, topical application of St. John’s wort salves and paste are highly recommended for women suffering from these pregnancy-related conditions. [11]
Prevents Cancer
Cancer research has recently begun putting more faith in the role that St. John’s wort could play. Laboratory research conducted by Susan J. Murch and Praveen K. Saxena, Department of Plant Agriculture, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada has also shown a definite correlation between the prevention and treatment of leukemia with consistent use of St. John’s Wort supplements. [12] According to the study, melatonin‐rich germplasm line of St John’s wort may ease fundamental studies on melatonin biosynthesis, metabolism and new developments in natural products for treatment of cancer.
Word of Caution: The most common negative effects of St. John’s wort are dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and confusion. These effects generally occur in people with diagnosed bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. St. John’s wort can also be a dangerous mix with a variety of medications. It is essential to discuss your current conditions with a physician before adding this herb to your supplement regimen.

Time to ink some new regulations: Tattoos may be dangerous to human health

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS:

Tattoos have risen to mainstream status while maintaining their rebellious appeal. According to a 2015 Harris Poll, nearly 50% of millennials and 40% of individuals under the age of 35 have at least one tattoo.
Despite their prominence, tattoos are not as safe as most consumers assume. Research regarding their safety has lagged behind their popularity; however, medical science is raising new concerns about toxin exposure and subsequent health risks. These risks may not be clarified or manifest in exposed individuals for years to come.
The United States Food and Drug Administration encourages people to “Think Before You Ink,” however, it does not effectively regulate tattoo ink or its composition. Though it has “not approved any pigments for injection into the skin for cosmetic purposes,” there are no product labeling requirements, leaving consumers at the mercy of ink manufacturers. The FDA acknowledges that tattoo inks may contain industrial strength pigments formulated for printers or automobile paint.
Tattooing is more akin to a medical procedure than many consumers recognize, without a thorough disclosure or understanding of the potential harms. It is important to note that the placement of body ink prompts an immune system response and increases systemic vulnerability to toxin exposure. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), a European Union equivalent to the FDA, remarked in 2018 that it is “well known that tattoo inks can and do contain substances of concern such as identified carcinogens.” Carcinogens are chemicals known to cause cancer.

First Death in a Spate of Vaping Sicknesses Reported by Health Officials

NY TIMES
A patient in Illinois is the first to die of a mysterious lung illness linked to vaping, public health officials announced on Friday. The death occurred as doctors and hospitals nationwide report an increasing number of vaping-related respiratory illnesses this summer: 193 cases have now been reported in 22 states, including 22 cases in Illinois, officials said. They have been stumped in recent weeks by the cause. State investigators have not found a common link — other than vaping in general — among the patients turning up in emergency rooms. Many patients, including some in Illinois, have acknowledged vaping of tetrahydrocannabinol, or (T.H.C.), the high-inducing chemical in marijuana, according to statements from federal and state health agencies.

Another Reason To End Fluoridation: Fluoride Consumption During Pregnancy Lowers IQ Of Children

An influential medical research Journal the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a very interesting study that links fluoride consumption during pregnancy to lower IQs in children.

The study funded by the Canadian government and the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Science, was conducted using 512 pregnant women from six Canadian cities. The scientists then measured their exposure in various different ways including – analyzing the amount of fluoride in their urine; looking at how much tap water and tea they drank; and comparing the fluoride concentration in the community drinking water.

Then, after the women had birth and the children were 3 or 4, the researchers administered IQ tests to the kids.

“We saw an association between prenatal fluoride exposure and lower IQ scores in children,” said Rivka Green, lead author of the study.

Fellow researcher, Christine Till, agreed with Rivka Green. She stated to NPR that:
“Only boys were affected when we looked at urinary fluoride,” she says, “but both boys and girls were affected when we looked at maternal fluoride intake or water fluoride concentration.”
“I think people are going to be shocked but I think people should realize that science is constantly evolving,” senior study author Till says. A previous study in Mexico found a similar link, she says, so this is not the first to suggest a connection. This finding is likely to spur more research on the topic.
There are three types of fluoride used to “fluoridate” water supplies: Fluorosilicic acid, sodium fluorosilicate, and sodium fluoride.

Fluorosilicic acid is the type most often used for cost reasons, and it is derived from phosphate fertilizers according to the CDC’s website.

The other two are created by adding either table salt or caustic soda to the mix. Fluoride is also found in toothpaste, food, tea and other products.

Harvard Professor David Bellinger stated that “high-quality epidemiological studies,” are still needed. However, “the hypothesis that fluoride is a neurodevelopmental toxicant must now be given serious consideration,” Bellinger added.

Someone needs to educate the Daily Beast on fluoride since they inaccurately mocked the dangers of a potential neurotoxic chemical, stating essentially that fluoride is safe and anyone who says its not is a conspiracy theorist in a recent fluoride propaganda article.

Daily Beast even attempts to mix in being health conscious about fluoride with caring about vaccinations and various metallic adjuvants. What the Beast’s ignorance fails to address are the numerous amounts of problems with both fluoride and vaccines. See this author’s previous article on Natural Blaze about the history of dangers with vaccines if you are interested (here).

No, fluoride is not safe; it accumulates and never finds a way out of your body. But don’t tell the Daily Beast that daunting factoid.  In fact, the same medical journal, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), stated in their Sept. 18, 1943 issue that fluorides are general protoplasmic poisons that change the permeability of the cell membrane by certain enzymes. And an editorial published in the Journal of the American Dental Association on Oct. 1, 1944,  stated:

Drinking water containing as little as 1.2 ppm fluoride will cause developmental disturbances. We cannot run the risk of producing such serious systemic disturbances. The potentialities for harm outweigh those for good.
If you bring up the topic of fluoride you’ll be heavily ridiculed, as the Daily Beast proved. However, numerous cited scientific research studies in the rest of this article will make you think twice. That maybe, just maybe, a chemical does cause damage to the human body in numerous ways and is linked to several disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain, and the thyroid gland, as well as lowering IQ.

Fluoridating water has long been debated across the country, and some opponents have argued that its health effects aren’t completely understood. There is a host of scientific research besides what’s mentioned above that I guess Daily Beast just decides doesn’t exist.

To this writer’s knowledge, in 1995, Dr. Phyllis Mullenix Ph.D., a highly respected pharmacologist and toxicologist, found that rats who had fluoride added to their diet exhibited abnormal behavioral traits in a published study.

In 2005, a study conducted at the Harvard School of Dental Health found that fluoride in tap water directly contributed to causing bone cancer in young boys.

“New American research suggests that boys exposed to fluoride between the ages of five and 10 will suffer an increased rate of osteosarcoma – bone cancer – between the ages of 10 and 19,” according to a London Observer article about the study.

Based on the findings of the study, the respected Environmental Working Group — a non-profit research organization environmental watchdog — lobbied to have fluoride in tap water be added to the U.S. government’s classified list of substances known or anticipated to cause cancer.

After reviewing fluoride toxicological data, the NRC reported in 2006, “It’s apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain.”

In another article by Scientific American, a study “Concluded that fluoride can subtly alter endocrine function, especially in the thyroid — the gland that produces hormones regulating growth and metabolism.”

The report also notes that “a series of epidemiological studies in China have associated high fluoride exposures with lower IQ.”

“Epidemiological studies and tests on lab animals suggest that high fluoride exposure increases the risk of bone fracture, especially in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and diabetics,” writes Dan Fagin.

Fagin interviewed Steven Levy, director of the Iowa Fluoride Study which tracked about 700 Iowa children for sixteen years. Nine-year-old “Iowa children who lived in communities where the water was fluoridated were 50 percent more likely to have mild fluorosis… than [nine-year-old] children living in nonfluoridated areas of the state,” writes Fagin.
